9/28/1853: Jefferson Wallace becomes the first person to be stuck in a modern elevator with a safety cable. Previously, if the elevator malfunctioned, the rider would fall to their death. Wallace would have preferred this to the starvation he died from while people were figuring out how to rescue him.
